BIG, a climate technology company, has joined forces with BJC, a comprehensive commercial import-export business operating from upstream to downstream, both domestically and internationally, to explore the feasibility of using hydrogen-powered forklifts in BJC’s business operations. This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote business sustainability, marking the first study of hydrogen-powered forklifts in Thailand’s retail industry.
A significant step towards carbon neutrality
This collaboration underscores both companies’ commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. BJC has set a target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 15% by 2025, promoting clean energy and minimizing environmental impact. As a hydrogen expert in Thailand, with its parent company Air Products being a global leader in hydrogen innovation, BIG can leverage its knowledge and experience to support this study. The goal is to assess the potential and suitability of hydrogen-powered forklifts for BJC’s diverse operations, spanning upstream, midstream, and downstream.
BIG is committed to driving Thailand towards a low-carbon society
Mr. Piyabut Charuphen, Managing Director of BIG, stated, “Our partnership with BJC is a significant step towards promoting the use of clean energy in Thailand’s industries, particularly in the logistics sector where forklifts are widely used. Hydrogen is not only a clean energy source but also a key driver for Thailand’s industrial sector to achieve carbon neutrality. It helps businesses reduce costs, increase operational efficiency, and offers high safety. BIG has experience in developing Thailand’s first hydrogen fueling station prototype and is ready to apply its knowledge and technology to develop comprehensive hydrogen solutions for Thailand’s industrial sector. This collaboration aligns with BIG’s ‘Generating a Cleaner Future’ business goal, positioning us as a leader in clean and sustainable energy solutions. BIG sees the potential of hydrogen and is committed to promoting it as one of the country’s energy sources, ready to be part of driving this change.”
BJC aims for sustainable production
Mr. Aswin Techajareonvikul, CEO and President of BJC Big C Group, added, “BJC Big C is committed to sustainable business practices, as evidenced by our recognition as a globally sustainable company in the food and consumer staples retailing industry. Our exploration of hydrogen-powered forklifts is part of our efforts to reduce our environmental impact and enhance our corporate image. We aim to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This year, we have adopted the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to guide our decision-making and set ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets. BJC believes that a good industry must go hand-in-hand with the concept of sustainable development, encompassing society, environment, and governance. We integrate ESG principles into our operations from upstream to downstream, creating a strong driving force for sustainability.”
