BIG and PTT Partner to Build Second Air Separation Unit (MAP2), Leveraging LNG Cold Energy to Propel Net Zero Success from MAP1

BANGKOK, 14 July 2025

PTT Public Company Limited, Thailand’s leading energy company, and BIG, Thailand’s Leading Low-Carbon Industrial Gas Company, have signed an agreement to jointly develop a new Air Separation Unit (ASU) project, named MAP2. Located in Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, Rayong Province, this facility will utilize cold energy from the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) regasification process in its industrial gas production. This project builds upon the success of the MAP1 project, which has significantly driven industries towards Net Zero goals. Construction of the MAP2 ASU project is set to commence in Q1 2026.

The MAP2 Air Separation Unit project reflects the commitment of both organizations to drive Thailand towards a low-carbon society. It will employ advanced and environmentally friendly industrial gas production technology by maximizing the utilization of cold energy from the LNG receiving and regasification process. This will significantly reduce energy consumption, lower production costs, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

Mr. Ramani Velu, Managing Director, BIG, said, “The success of the MAP1 project, which delivered low-carbon industrial gases, including low-carbon oxygen, low-carbon nitrogen, and low-carbon argon, enabling industries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move towards Net Zero goals, also includes offering solutions and technologies that help customers and industries reduce their carbon footprint. These solutions have been certified by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) (TGO) for their ability to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 50% compared to conventional industrial gas production, resulting in an average reduction of 93,000 tons of CO2 per year*. This technology will be further enhanced in MAP2 for even greater efficiency, driving BIG to expand its efforts in the MAP2 project. This collaboration with PTT reinforces our business strategy of ‘Generating a Cleaner Future’ to create a clean and sustainable future. By integrating BIG’s expertise in industrial gases with PTT’s energy capabilities, BIG is confident that MAP2 will be another crucial step forward in enhancing the competitiveness of Thai industries at an international level.”

The MAP2 Air Separation Unit project will serve as another key mechanism to support various Thai industries, such as petrochemical, metal, automotive, electronics, and food, by providing access to high-quality low-carbon industrial gases produced through carbon-reduction processes. This is a crucial global trend. Both PTT and BIG are committed to working closely together to ensure the successful completion of the MAP2 project as planned, contributing to the sustainable growth of the country’s economy based on environmental technology and innovation.
