“BIG” increases medical oxygen production capacity of the new air separation plant operated under a joint venture company between BIG and PTT. With the total daily production capacity of over 1,150 tons, BIG can supply medical oxygen to the public healthcare system during the new surge of the COVID-19’s Omicron variant.

Mr. Piyabut Charuphen – Managing Director of Bangkok Industrial Gas Company Limited (BIG), Thailand’s largest oxygen producer – revealed that the new surge of the COVID-19’s Omicron variant, in many regions has led to the rising number of new confirmed cases. BIG assures of the availability of medical oxygen for the public healthcare system. Since October 2021, BIG and PTT Public Company Limited (PTT) have operated the new air separation plant under the JV company, Map Ta Phut Air Products Company Limited (MAP), which enables BIG to reach the total oxygen production capacity of over 1,150 tons per day and meets the country’s demand.

“From the recent spread of COVID-19’s Delta variant, BIG has been working with medical professionals and volunteer squads to supply oxygen to the COVID-19 patients. We are ready to support all relevant sectors to meet the increasing oxygen demand during the new wave of Omicron. Currently, the number of patients in hospitals all over the country is rising. Therefore, this time BIG has increased the production capacity of our existing air separation plants and the new one at MAP which was operated under the cooperation between BIG and PTT. This new air separation plant commenced its operation last October. BIG’s also includes logistics management, reserve tanks of liquid oxygen with the storage capacity of over 7,300 tons and oxygen cylinder procurement under the business continuity plan. Digital platforms and big data are applied in our supply chain management to address medical oxygen demand in any situation,” Mr. Piyabut said.

BIG supplies oxygen in both liquid and gaseous forms. Liquid oxygen enables transportation in a larger volume or over 800 times in comparison with oxygen in its gaseous form. Liquid oxygen will be converted to gas at hospital before use while oxygen in a gaseous form allows hospitals and communities an instant use from its cylinder.

“BIG” provided medical oxygen support to aid fight against the COVID-19 in Thailand by expediting the urgent delivery of medical oxygen and the equipment for the COVID-19 patients at Amata City Chonburi and Amata City Rayong Community Isolation Centers.

Mr. Piyabut Charuphen – Managing Director of Bangkok Industrial Gas Company Limited or BIG, the largest oxygen producer in Thailand – revealed that the spread of the COVID-19 still continued widely. BIG was concerned about this tough situation. Many agencies established volunteer squads or field hospitals to help the COVID-19 patients. BIG, therefore, expedited the supply of medical oxygen to help the critically ill patients who required a continuous supply of oxygen. On August 27, 2021, BIG presented medical oxygen, cylinders, and oxygen regulators to Mr. Viboon Kromadit, Director and Chief Marketing Officer of Amata Corporation Public Company Limited for the use at Amata City Chonburi and Amata City Rayong community isolation centers.

Regarding this support, BIG was concerned about the patients at the community isolation centers who required medical oxygen to restore their oxygen levels. Amata Corporation Public Company Limited joined hands with private firms to convert factories in Amata City Chonburi Industrial Estate and Amata City Rayong Industrial Estate into community isolation centers. The community isolation centers are equipped with over 500 beds for the COVID-19 patients classified in the green group and meet the public health standards.

The oxygen cylinders and regulators will be used to help critical patients restore their oxygen levels in the blood. WHA provides the warehouse with a usable area of 10,000 sq.m. in WHA Mega Logistics Center Chonlaharnpichit KM.4, Samut Prakan to be used as a 1,300-bed field hospital.

Currently, BIG has a production capacity of oxygen at 1,000 tons per day while the normal demand is at 300-350 tons per day. However, in the situation where the number of patients is rising, the demand increases by 20% or 400 tons per day.

“The new wave of COVID-19 in Thailand at present affects every sector. The number of new patients receiving treatment at hospitals is rising. Medical oxygen is the key to cure patients with a lung infection and in a critical state. BIG has a plan to support this growing demand. BIG has managed the production capacity, transportation, and a reserve a storage tanks of liquid oxygen Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate, Rayong. The reserve tank can contain over 7,300 tons of liquid oxygen. Furthermore, BIG is going to operate a new air separation plant in this August 2021. Therefore, the oxygen production capacity will increase by 140 tons per day while the total capacity will reach almost 1,150 tons per day.

Apart from the limited production, a shortage of oxygen in many countries also results from transportation. Oxygen in a gaseous form can be transported in a limited volume unlike in a liquid form. In Thailand, Liquid oxygen will be transported and vaporized at hospitals. Liquid oxygen consumes less space and can be transported in a massive bulk or 800 times of gaseous oxygen. In case of urgency, BIG can adjust the air separation process to increase oxygen production by minimizing the production of nitrogen. Furthermore, industrial gas with the same purity standard can also be used to support the demand for medical treatment.
